From Discipline to Hope: Diana and Juan’s Story
When Diana first heard about the Rio Bravo Project, she wasn’t sure what to expect. Her cousins had invited her 10-year-old son, Juan, to try a jiu-jitsu class. Diana assumed there would be a cost—but soon discovered everything, from training to uniforms to a hot meal after class, was completely free.
That moment changed the course of their family’s story.
A Mom’s Sacrifice, A Son’s Growth
Juan has now been training for two years, and in that time Diana has seen remarkable growth. “He doesn’t wait for me to remind him anymore,” she shared. “He gets his chores and homework done before training—on his own. That didn’t happen before.”
Recently, their family faced a new challenge. They moved to a new house—40 minutes away from the gym—and their vehicle broke down. Still, Diana refused to let that stop Juan from training. “With the move and a new school, it didn’t seem wise to take jiu-jitsu away too. He needs this. It’s part of his stability.”
More Than a Sport
Diana remembers when Juan was younger and once misused wrestling moves at school. But jiu-jitsu has taught him a new mindset: responsibility, respect, and self-control. “Now he knows it’s not a game or a reason to start problems. He understands.”
For Diana, the impact goes beyond her son’s behavior. “When we saw the patience and dedication of Profe Steve, we were moved. We’ve never known someone who serves like that—with so much discipline and love. It inspired us to look for ways we can serve others, too.”
A Milestone Moment
This past Saturday, Juan earned his grey belt—a symbol not just of his skill, but of the perseverance and growth he’s shown through every challenge. For Diana, it’s a proud moment that reminds her of why she makes the sacrifices she does.
Gratitude and a Challenge
Diana is deeply thankful for the donors who make this possible. “The uniforms, the food, the time the coach invests—it all matters. You’re planting a seed in our kids, even if not every parent sees it right away. I see it, and I’m grateful.”
Her story is one of many, but it captures the heart of Rio Bravo: transformation through discipline, love, and community.
